It's that time of the year again, Fishn for the Mission tournament. Fishing for the Mission is an annual tournament for Dorado with an "other species" category, that benefits the Mission and people of Loreto. It's a great event for our community. It is a two day tournament, yesterday being the first day our team decided to go out far with big hopes of finding big dorado since everything closer in has been small. Day one ended up being a long boat ride, not being able to find any sargasso left us with some small mahi-mahi mahi-mahi we caught while trolling. Day two started off with a bang, this morning the sun was barely even up  as we came across our first paddy loaded with dorado. We had some fun for awhile but weren't getting the size we were hoping for continuing on with not a lot of luck a team decision led us to shoot for the other species category. So off with wishes to land some big alma jacks and or yellowtail. Our plan paid off and we landed some good sized yellowtail and cabrilla. Off to the scales we went. We ended up getting 3rd place in the "Other species" category but had a great two days on the water and caught a lot of fish. Overall the weekend was good for all participants. Thanks to all for organizing and participating in this great event hosted by Chris Wheaton.

Today we left Puerto Escondido shortly after leaving the marina we spotted a mother and baby fin whale. We continued north in search of dorado we found a weed line that looked promising. We spotted some small dorado on the first patties then a large dorado on a bigger piece of kelp. We worked that one dorado then a few more appeared. We were unable to get a quick bite and our clients only having booked a half day wanted to go bottom fish. We continued north and caught some dinner. In the afternoon part of the crew went out for some fishing with the family, we already knew what was north so wanted to checkout south with a busy schedule ahead. We went south of Catalan where the water was green but had warmed back up to 82°, the weather was calm all day with a slight breeze. A good amount of striped marlin were seen.  Large sargasso patties floating produced 3 dorado for us. While heading back in we spotted some porpoise and trolled the cedar plugs, as luck would have it the tuna were right there with them we landed a total of 10 yellowfin. Made for a great afternoon for some fishing in Loreto with the kids!

6/8/18 - 6/9/18

Yesterday and today we had clients that wanted to get dorado, we left Puerto Escondido early in the morning both days hoping to fulfill their wish.  We were on a direct mission to find dorado. We trolled feathers as we looked for any possible sign that would lead us to the dorado. We were getting into water temps ranging from 80-89º in the warmest spots, we were seeing more flying fish than in previous days so we were sure it would be a good day. We searched long and hard both days. We finally started to find small pieces of kelp (sargasso) which led us to very large patties, yesterday we found the dorado!! Unfortunately we were not lucky enough to get the bite. Today we were back on some more patties as well but the dorado weren't home. The anticipation is killing us because it's going to be any day until we are landing them!

We had an epic day being on the water in Loreto. We left out of Puerto Escondido Marina and ventured out into the Sea of Cortez. Passing two of the Islands of Loreto Isla Monserrate and Isla Santa Catalan we had an encounter with a humpback whale, so was great to have the chance do some whale watching on our way to do some offshore fishing. As we were trolling around we spotted some marlin that we casted some baits to but they just weren't hungry enough at that time. No too long after we had a dorado strike one of our jigs and we were able to land that fish. As we continued trolling through the waters of Loreto our Captain spotted birds in the distance so we made our way towards them and sure enough we found ourselves in a school of yellowfin tuna. A great time was had by all landing these powerful fish. After the bite turned off we made our way back to the marina but not before we had many dolphins putting on a show for us which was a perfect way to end an amazing day.
