tuna fishing

9/29

Got out with a plan to go after big marlin, that was quickly sidetracked as we found another pod of porpoise with birds again. We changed our course and headed that way putting on the trusty cedar plugs. Not long after entering the porpoise the lines were going off again. As we were landing the first yellowfin tuna more started to come to the back of the boat. We started throwing out sardines and fly lining sardines hooking up to some tuna that way as well. The tuna were a lot more active today as they were jumping across the surface as well. Caught some good size tuna with the biggest being 75lbs. There was definitely some bigger ones in the school just didn't get luck with them. Water is starting to get a little choppy with storms approaching, temps were 86.

Headed out today mainly targeting yellowfin tuna. We ran offshore outside of Catalina quickly spotting a seat cushion floating and a marlin hanging out near by, didn't have any luck there so continued on. After trolling for a couple hours we found what we were looking for, birds and porpoise. Made our way over to them putting on the cedar plugs and trolling through them, didn't take long and lines starting going off. After while seemed like the tuna went back down so we moved along. While making our way back in we found a sailfish who gave us two good strikes on the lures but were not able to get the hook up. There was tons of life on the water, three pods of whales, turtles, seals, bait, birds, and dolphins. Water temp ranged from 84-86 and water could was a beautiful blue with very calm seas. Should be able to get a couple more days like this before the next storm.

This Friday the 13th will be one thats talked about for awhile. Today we had some first timers out on the boat with us, obviously we always want to deliver but with this being some of their first times we wanted them to have that hunger to want to do this many more times in the future. The weather and water was absolutely perfect today it was very calm and we were able to spot a few marlin we could cut to but didn't succeed. However we did get lucky on some very good yellowtail and cabrilla. After the bottom bite slowed down we suggested we should troll for marlin and dorado so thats what we did. Not long after we started trolling we had a striped marlin  coming in to check out our lures. We quickly got a live bait in the water and had the marlin very interested after a few minutes of enticing the marlin with the live bait it finally struck. We hooked up to this marlin which put on a good fight, we landed the striped marlin got a few quick pictures then safely released it. As we were heading in for the day we got a call on the radio from Capt. Robert Ross advising us that tuna were spotted further south of our location. We were unable to make it down their but angler Frank Kavanaugh who was fishing with Ross was lucky enough to land a monster yellowfin tuna. But our day was not completely over, as we were heading into Puerto Escondido just outside of Danzante we spotted several Orcas (killer whales) They ended up putting a great show for us. We definitely succeeded at delivering for these first timers but may have set the bar a little high for their next venture haha.

Today we left Puerto Escondido shortly after leaving the marina we spotted a mother and baby fin whale. We continued north in search of dorado we found a weed line that looked promising. We spotted some small dorado on the first patties then a large dorado on a bigger piece of kelp. We worked that one dorado then a few more appeared. We were unable to get a quick bite and our clients only having booked a half day wanted to go bottom fish. We continued north and caught some dinner. In the afternoon part of the crew went out for some fishing with the family, we already knew what was north so wanted to checkout south with a busy schedule ahead. We went south of Catalan where the water was green but had warmed back up to 82°, the weather was calm all day with a slight breeze. A good amount of striped marlin were seen.  Large sargasso patties floating produced 3 dorado for us. While heading back in we spotted some porpoise and trolled the cedar plugs, as luck would have it the tuna were right there with them we landed a total of 10 yellowfin. Made for a great afternoon for some fishing in Loreto with the kids!
